The Ackerman Board of Aldermen held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Dec. 1 where they discussed having the water tanks cleaned, closing an unnamed street and various other matters.
Mayor Dick Cain told the board that the state requires the water tanks to be inspected every five years and next year is the deadline for Ackerman. They obtained three quotes with prices varying.
Mike Brasher, Public Works director, suggested hiring the quote of $2, 950 per tank because the tanks would be drained, inspected, washed out and the Town will receive an extension report with photos of the inspection. The other two quotes included an inspection without draining the wells.
Joe Griffin, board attorney, reminded the board of purchasing laws and quotes stating the Town has quotes on “apples and oranges” meaning the obtained quotes to do match.
After a discussion of purchasing laws and audits the board tabled the matter and asked Brasher to get two more quotes on having the wells drained, inspected and washed out to match the first quote’s scope of work.
Jo Johnson, of Quinn Street, asked the board to close an unnamed Town road that was found on her property after having her property surveyed.
After research of the unnamed road, Griffin found that the road was never opened.
The board approved to close the unnamed road and authorized the Town clerk and Mayor to sign a quitclaim deed for the road.
In other board business the aldermen approved:
• An increase to the building permit minimum from $20 to $50.
• To reimburse the Choctaw County Economic Development Foundation $1,100 for Christmas Parade expenses.
• Mississippi Municipal League Conference room reservations at the Beau Rivage for June 26-29, 2010.
• Quote to build batting cages at the Tom Glasgow Park from ACI for approximately $6,000.
• To accept a donation of $1,875 from the Ackerman Athletic Booster Club.
• To use a portion of the Ackerman Athletic Booster Club’s donation for baseball/softball nets for the batting cages for approximately $1,450.
• Travel for Mayor Dick Cain to the Mid Winter Conference in Jackson on Jan. 26-28, 2010.
• Travel for Joe Griffin, board attorney, Cain to the Mid Winter Conference in Jackson on Jan. 28, 2010.
• Invoice from Principal Life Insurance for $110.75.
• Travel expense from Mike Brasher, Public Works director, for pesticide training for $31.
The next Board of Aldermen meeting will be Jan. 5, 2010 at 6 p.m. in the boardroom.
