It was a cold and damp night of football at Weir Friday night and everyone definitely got his or her money's worth.
Weir got the ball first on their 23-yard line and after four plays, they had the ball on their 42-yard line and Jermaine Woodard broke through Vardaman's defensive line for a beautiful 58 yard run into the endzone. Jonathan Beard put the ball through the uprights for the PAT. This gave Weir a 7-0 lead for with 9:25 left in the first quarter.
The Rams made an impressive drive going 63 yards in nine plays. On Vardaman's tenth play of the drive, Kelvin Clemons carried the ball 12 yards for the score and Pedro Salas put the kick through for the PAT.
With the score tied at 7, it turned into a defensive game for both teams. While both teams scored on their opening drives, each had the ball for three possessions before the half, but neither could get past the other defense to add to the score.
In the third quarter, Vardaman started on their 48, but after four plays had to punt the ball away. Weir started their first possession of the second half on their 23-yard line and drove the ball down to the Rams' 43.
Vardaman's Jarvis Pratt made an unbelievable interception to give the Rams the ball back on their 45-yard line. On the eighth play of the drive, Jarvis Pratt glided 17 yards for the second touchdown for Vardaman and Pedro Salas made good on the PAT.
With Vardaman leading 14-7, Weir got the ball on their 36-yard line after the Rams' kickoff went out of bounds. The Lions could not answer and had to punt after four plays.
Now the Rams, clearly at an advantage, got the ball on their 45 yard line and on the first play, Kelvin Clemons ran 46 yards to give Vardaman first and goal on Weir's 9 yard line. On fourth down, Jarvis Pratt carried the ball across the goal line and Pedro Salas put the ball through the uprights to give Vardaman a 21-7 lead with 11:15 left in the fourth quarter.
With a handful of Weir's "Fair Weather Fans" questioning the preparedness and ability of the players and coaches, the Lions proved why they are winners. Weir had the ball on their 35-yard and on the second play, Jermaine Woodard found Cedric Miller for the 65-yard touchdown pass and Jonathan Beard made the PAT.
Now the Rams lead 21-14. Vardaman started on Weir's 45-yard line after the kickoff and in twelve plays, the Rams had the ball on Weir's 4-yard line. On fourth down, the Lions' defense stood strong and got the ball back on downs. Some of the "Fair Weather fans" were still questioning the players' and coaches' abilities.
The Lions were deep in the hole on their 3-yard line and WHAM - Cedric Miller hauled in a 53-yard pass from Jermaine Woodard. Then, BAM- Jermaine Woodard threw a 40-yard pass to Cedric Miller who made an unbelievable catch. Now, (Thank you Ma'am) Jermaine Woodard bulldozed his way into the endzone from 4 yards out. Jonathan Beard hit the PAT.
The game was tied 21-21 with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter. The Rams had one more chance to pull off what a lot of people had been waiting to see. But, the Lions' defense showed just how prepared they were and got the ball back on downs with 30 seconds of regulation. Weir also could not find the endzone and the game was headed into overtime.
In overtime, Vardaman had the ball first on Weir's 10-yard line. The Rams had the ball on Weir's 4-yard line on fourth down and Jarvis Pratt found Marcus Kidd in the endzone for Vardaman's first completion of the night. Pedro Salas hit the PAT and the Ram's were leading 28-21.
Weir started on the 10-yard line and on third down Jermaine Woodard hit Darius Fair for the 9-yard touchdown pass. Jonathan Beard added the PAT to tie the score at 28-28.
In the second overtime, Weir had the ball first on Vardaman's 10-yard line. After two plays and a penalty on the third play, Jermaine Woodard connected with Cedric Miller for the touchdown. Jonathan Beard had an unusual missed PAT. Now, the Rams needed a touchdown and PAT for the win. Yet, the Lions were not ready to give up. After a holding penalty on the Rams, Darius Fair made the game winning interception in the endzone. Weir had proved their mettle and won the game 34-28.
Weir's offense rushed the ball 26 times for 186 yards led by Jermaine Woodard with 13 carries for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns. Woodard also had the entire Lions' passing stats with 7 of 21 passes for 195 yards with 3 touchdowns and one interception. Cedric Miller led the receivers with 6 catches for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jeffrey Holman led Weir's defense with 15 tackles on the night.
Vardaman's offense rushed 60 times for 350 yards led by Kelvin Clemons with 36 carries for 226 yards and 1 touchdown. Jarvis Pratt was 1 of 7 passes for 4 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception for the Rams.
After hearing some of the comments of the "Fair Weather Fans," it was apparent that Weir's players and coaches were very prepared and very able to stand strong on the field and win again.
Weir hosts Coffeeville this Friday night at 7 p.m. Let me say, not to be ugly, if you are coming to the game to see Weir lose or to criticize the team, save your money and stay at home. These players and coaches are some of the best in the nation and they deserve the best fans. Come out and truly support the Lions Friday night in their quest for another win.
