Program supports military families

Area residents and businesses have the opportunity to make the holidays a little more special for a military family.

They may sponsor a serviceman's Christmas present home to the woman that is most important to him as part of "Twelve Days of Christmas-Love from Iraq." The program is designed to ensure that spouses of soldiers are not forgotten at Christmas this year.

Coordinator Debra Lawson of Ackerman said all financial contributions will be used to purchase gifts for spouses or other loved ones of soldiers serving in Iraq with the 155th Heavy Brigade Combat Team. The unit includes National Guard members from Webster, Choctaw and Winston counties.

"If we can take anything off their plate and make life just a little bit nicer, just a little bit easier, we owe it to them," Lawson stated in a brochure about the program. "This program is designed to let our heroes be heroes yet again by allowing them to send their love back home in a loving and lovely gesture."

Donations to the program are needed by Nov. 20 and sponsors will be supplied with the name of the serviceman they are sponsoring.

To be a sponsor of "Twelve Days of Christmas-Love from Iraq" contact Lawson at 285-8296 or 285-3575. People may send their support to Lawson, Box 6039, Hwy. 415, Ackerman, MS 39735.
