Supes lease land from CCSD

The Choctaw Plaindealer

The Choctaw County Board of Supervisors has entered in to a land lease with the Choctaw County School Board to try to help bring broadband internet to the Town of French Camp.

The supervisors have been working with the Community Development League and the Town of French Camp to help the CDL bring broadband internet to French Camp.

The CDL has received a grant that would build a community center in French Camp and provide free broadband internet access to the community. They also hope to offer free broadband internet to people within three miles of the Town of French Camp, for a limited time period.

CDL owns a monopole located on land owned by the Choctaw County School District located near French Camp Elementary school. They need access to land near it to setup the monopole for broadband internet service.

The supervisors agreed to try to lease the land from the CCSD to allow CDL use for broadband internet.

During the June 8, Choctaw County School Board meeting, District 5 Supervisor Eric Chambers asked the school board to lease the county land around the monopole near FCE. The county then planned to sublease it to CDL.

After a discussion about terms in the lease, the school board approved to lease the land to the county, with the exception of the sublease to CDL.

Kevin Null, school board attorney, said the CCSD could lease to public body but could not allow the county to sublease the land without an attorney general opinion.

Chambers asked the board to accept the lease with the exception of the sublease part of the lease.

The school board approved the land lease.

The supervisors are now working with CDL to allow them to use the leased land to start trying to bring broadband internet to the Town of French Camp.
