Supervisors discuss hospital, courthouse

The Choctaw Plaindealer

The Choctaw County Board of Supervisors had two visitors in their March 2, regularly scheduled board meeting.

Geoffrey Yoste, director of Radiology, with the Choctaw County Medical Center introduced himself to the board stating, "it's an honor to help serve community."

Yoste said he is looking forward to helping the community and serving the CCMC.

District 5 Supervisor Eric Chambers asked Yoste what attracted him to Choctaw County.

He said in his job interview, it was mentioned that part of his job would be to get the community involved with the hospital and he likes a challenge.

"It's a small hospital and you are able to get out and meet the people," said Yoste.

The supervisors' second visitor was Ed Anderson who is in accounting at CCMC.

He said he has been working in hospitals since 1972 and in Mississippi since 1994.

"I enjoy small Mississippi hospitals," said Anderson.

Vision Glass is currently replacing the Choctaw County Courthouse windows. The board discussed options of hiring a contractor to replace the window treatments or use the Choctaw County inmates to do the labor. After a short discussion, the board decided to use the inmates to do the widow treatments.

Steve Montgomery, Emergency Management director, visited the board to discuss a variety of topics.

He turned in a request from Bywy Volunteer Fire Department for the county to purchase a list of equipment that Montgomery said Bywy VFD needs to put on the new fire truck that will arrive soon. He said the new fire truck needs the equipment to meet 1901 standards set by the state of Mississippi.

The board also discussed procedures for updating the 911 and Solid Waste databases with new address changes. Right now, the Solid Waste database is being updated more often than the 911 database. The board discussed possible ways to have the 911 database updated more often to improve emergency response in the county.

Choctaw County Sheriff Cloyd Halford asked the board if he could hire another full-time dispatcher. He said the Sheriff's Office does not have enough full time dispatchers to work if someone is sick or cannot work. The board approved for Halford to hire the full time dispatcher and to advertise to hire.

The supervisors also approved to new full time dispatchers at the CCSO who are Amanda Vance and Tracy Dewberry.

In other board business the supervisors approved:

¥ Inventory deletion of a printer.

¥ Two claims from Pryor and Morrow totaling $98, 385 to pay Vision Glass, who are replacing the Courthouse windows. The county will be reimbursed from the Department of Archives and History.

¥ Interest rate from Hancock Bank, lowest bidder, for District 3 to purchase a tractor, building and welder.

¥ Brent McKnight to attend an Emergency Management conference April 27-29.

¥ Certificates of attendance from Don Threadgill, Chancery clerk, and Ouida Loper, election commissioner.

¥ To pay Ron Welch $3000 the mandatory annual fee for inspecting the Choctaw County Jail.

¥ Emergency Medical grant of $5,671 to use in the ambulance fund.

¥ For the landfill to open at 8 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. and to close for lunch from noon until 1 p.m.

The next Board of Supervisors meeting will be March 23.
