The Choctaw County Board of Education worked through the February 9 regular meeting agenda following Superintendent Dr. Arlene Amos' recommendations on most items.
The Board approved a request from Reform Volunteer Fire Department to lease one to two acres of 16-section Land. Dr. Amos noted in her recommendation of the approval the acres requested were on cutover area with no trees presently on the land. The lease was approved at $100 per acre per year. Dr. Amos recommended the $100, which is a $25 increase on leases because the 16 section leases may undergo a value reevaluation in the near future.
The board denied the request from the members of Weir Charge of Methodist Churches to lease 16-section land for a church building. Dr. Amos in her recommendation to deny the request stated after examining the loss of income from tree planting for the life of the 10 acres, the lease was not financially feasible for the county.
The board voted to pay for the rest of the Weir paving project not covered by matching funds due to a misunderstanding of which group would cover which items.
The board convened in executive session to discuss the administrative interview process and to set an administrative pay scale.
In other matters during open session:
the board enjoyed a gift presented in honor of School Board Recognition week which is Feb. 15-21 as proclaimed by Gov. Haley Barbour.
approved several school trips to several places such as the "Baroque of Dresden" exhibit in Jackson for the Weir senior class.
approved several resignations and leaves.
approved the attendance of several conferences by staff and teachers.
approved several fundraisers at Weir.
approved the purchase of computers and equipment from State Title VI funds.
approved a request to move funds from 16-section to district maintenance to cover repairs to Ackerman Elementary.
approved school dockets.
The Choctaw County board of Education meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Choctaw County Administrative building.
