The Weir Lions (9-2) defeated Vardaman (9-3) on Friday night in the first round of the state playoffs and will now advance to the second round where they will match up against Ray Brooks.
The Lions traveled to Vardaman where they defeated their opponent in a close game with the final score coming to 30-28.
Both teams moved the ball well early in the contest. While Weir powered down field with the running game, Vardaman used its passing game to its advantage. Weir jumped out front 8-0 in the first quarter and kept the momentum until the final drive.
The Lions rushed for over 350 yards against Vardaman with Jermaine Woodard carrying the ball for 189 yards on the night. Woodard gained 76 of those yards on the final drive of the night which quarterback Tim Miller finished up with a touchdown for the win in the final seconds of the game.
The Lions have given up only two games during the regular season, one to this week's opponent, Ray Brooks, and the other to Coffeeville. Ray Brooks was the first team to defeat the Lions during the regular season. Before that the Lions held on to their undefeated record for the first eight weeks of the season as well as snapping a 43-game regular season winning streak for the Lions.
The Lions feel right at home in the second round of the state playoffs, due to the success they have had in the playoffs in the past.
Needless to say, the Lions are looking for a win this coming Friday and hoping to show Ray Brooks what they are really made of on their home territory.
