Acknowledgement and celebration is a new category that has been added to the list of items covered on the Choctaw County Board of Education's agenda for its monthly meetings.
Typically the board discusses financial matters, consent items and topics that deal mostly with the business side of running a school district. However Superintendent Arlene Amos, feels like this addition to the board meetings is long overdue.
"We tend to get wrapped up in the problems and financial things so often at board meetings and we forget about the positive things going on within the school district," said Amos. "The idea was suggested at a School Board Training meeting and I hope we are able to continue it at the rest of our board meetings."
For the month of January the board acknowledged Lee James for being selected President Elect for the National Association of Agriculture Educators (NAAE) and for becoming nationally board certified.
According to Amos, James is an outstanding leader for the students in the agricultural program and has been involved with the NAAE for the better part of his teaching career.
James first taught at Weir before transferring to the Vocational and Agricultural Department.
Amos also adds that it is important for the teachers and faculty of Choctaw County to be recognized beyond the school board meetings.
"Without strong teachers and faculty our school district would not be able to thrive and yield the achievements that make the community proud," said Amos. "It is important to remind community how much the leaders of our schools are doing to improve the schools."
After acknowledging James' recent accomplishments the board then got down to business discussing bids for the Baseball Field Fence at Weir Attendance Center that was damaged during Hurricane Katrina and approving the consent agenda which included,
Transfer of Ralph Maxwell from janitor at Ackerman High School to Transportation Department
Request from Ronda Huffman to hire Donald Morgan as janitor at Ackerman High School.
Request from Ronda Huffman to hire an In School Detention Assistant for 5th to 7th period.
Attendance of several Choctaw County teachers to training seminars, board meetings and workshops.
The Choctaw County Board of Education meets on the second Monday night of each month.
