Five Ackerman residents have qualified to as candidates for the office of the Mayor of Ackerman.
The qualifying deadline for the special election was Jan. 7.
Residents of Ackerman will have just a few short weeks to decide between Chuck Blaine, Mike Brasher, Dick Cain, Tommy Curtis and George Rooks, to be the next mayor of Ackerman.
Chuck Blaine, a former newspaper owner, could not be reached by press time.
Mike Brasher is currently the Ackerman Public Works director and has been since 2001.
He has been a resident of Ackerman for 32 years and is married to the former Pennie Cagle. They have four children.
Richard "Dick" Cain has been a resident of Ackerman for 20 years and is married to the former Nora Lynn McCullough. He has three children and two stepchildren.
Cain recently retired from land and offshore drilling, which he did for 26 years. He is an active member of Ackerman Baptist Church.
Tommy Curtis is a former Choctaw County Sheriff deputy and is a graduate of Ackerman High School and the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy. He also completed Crime Scene Investigation School. Curtis is married to Debby Curtis and they have three children.
George Rooks has been a resident of Ackerman for 26 years and is a Choctaw County Farm Bureau agent. His daughter is a teacher at Ackerman High School.
Rooks has served on the Board of Aldermen for 7 years and is the assistant volunteer coach for the AHS girls' basketball team.
