In a special meeting, the Choctaw County School Board approved Glen Beard Jr. as Weir Attendance Center interim principal and hired Casey Brasher as an assistant teacher at French Camp Elementary.
Glen Beard, Sr., principal at WAC, is experiencing medical problems and asked for a medical leave of absence from March 25-May 23 due to back problems.
The board voted to allow him the medical leave and approved Glen Beard Jr. as WAC interim principal. In the last board meeting, the board approved Glen Beard Jr. as 2008-2009 WAC principal.
After Pennie Brasher, board president, left the boardroom, the board approved to hire Casey Brasher as an assistant teacher at FCE.
Kevin Null, board attorney, said Pennie Brasher cannot ethically be involved in the vote to hire Casey Brasher or budget because she is her daughter.
The board discussed the types of proof of residency that is required for each school for the 2008-2009 school year.
Null said what is required now is good, but if someone is suspicious about where a student resides the board has a duty to inquire about it.
Brasher said she thought it was up to the school's administration to investigate where as student resides if necessary.
Null said it is a joint responsibility with the administration and the board.
"If a compliant is filed, we automatically investigate," said Null.
He added that if someone in the school system suspects a child does not reside where the said, then the district can investigate.
No action was taken on the discussion.
Also, in the board meeting, they recognized each Parent of the Year for each school and the countywide Parent of the Year.
The Parents of the Year:
County: Staci Perry
French Camp Elementary- Staci Perry
Ackerman Elementary-Dana Miles
Ackerman High School-Tim and Tonya Cutts
Weir Attendance Center- Meri Lawson
Brasher praised the parents of the year.
"If we didn't have good parents, we wouldn't have good schools," said Brasher.
The next school board meeting will be April 14 at 7 p.m.
