Volunteer firefighters devote many hours and days to helping the community. Three Bywy Volunteer Fire Department firefighters just took an extra step by spending 48 hours training to become Certified Volunteer Firefighters.

After spending a day, May 3, at the Fire Academy in Jackson, testing their newly acquired skills Shawn Morris, Jeremy Kelley, and Michael Holmes earned their certification.

They were not alone in this training, 13 volunteer firefighters from Winston County earned their certification under the direction of Louisville Fire Fighter Mike Towne and the day at the Fire Academy.

During the program, the students fought fires, participated in equipment cleanup, practiced rescuing people, and the many other skills necessary before they could return home as a certified volunteer firefighter.
