The Choctaw County Board of Supervisors approved the 2008-2009 tax levy in their Sept. 2 board meeting.
By approving the tax levy, the supervisors are setting the ad valorem taxes for the fiscal year 2008-2009, beginning Oct. 1 for the county, road districts, school districts and fixing the tax rates or levies for the county and the districts as states.
The amount of mills per area should produce the revenue necessary to meet the budget as approved and that the various school districts and countywide school maintenance levy are supported by proper and necessary petition.
According to Don Threadgill, Chancery clerk, one mill is estimated to bring in $50,000.
The county's levied taxes are approximately 38.25 mills that will bring in approximately $1,912,500.
The Choctaw County School District's levied taxes are approximately 42.42 mills that will bring in approximately $2,121,000.
Holmes Community College receives money from two mills of approximately $100,000.
The approved tax levy is:
General Fund purposes: 20.54 mills
The General Fund includes office administration, judicial and law enforcement, operations and maintenance of buildings and grounds, support and upkeep of Choctaw County Library, maintenance, support and operation of Choctaw County Hospital, budgets of Tax Assessor/Collector, Sheriff's Office, erection, remodeling, or repairing the Courthouse, Jail and other county buildings and more.
Fire Protection: 1.80 mills
Maintenance and construction of roads and bridges: 12.33 mills
This funds each supervisor district's road and bridge fund. Threadgill said approximately 10 percent of the mills is for a countywide road/bridge fund.
Solid Waste disposal: 2.22 mills
Maintenance and support of Holmes Junior College: 1 mill
Expansion of Holmes Junior College: 1 mill
Choctaw County School District Maintenance Fund: 38.33
Maintenance and Up-date of Reappraisal and County Mapping: 1.11 mills
Threadgill explained this is to update land records each year, to assess property in the county and for aerial photos of the county.
Support of the Choctaw County E911 operations: 0.25 mills
Choctaw County School District short-term notes issued for budget shortfalls: 0.49 mills
Choctaw County School District bond notes: 3 mills
Choctaw County School District's "New Programs": 0.60 mills
Also listed is a levied tax of 9 cents per acre on all timber and uncultivable land with Choctaw County as designated on the land assessment roll of 2003 for forest protection.
