Leighanne Horne and Tinker Forrester, Beautification and Resource Conservation chairmen for the 20th Century Club of Ackerman, attended a two-day state-sponsored grant writing workshop at the request of Ackerman Mayor Dick Cain.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Horne and Forrester were awarded a $3,000 grant for the Town of Ackerman. Their winning proposal, "The Main Attraction," emphasized the revitalization of Main Street in Ackerman.
Already banners have been re-hung and the "Golden Broom" award has been implemented. In the coming weeks, the two islands along the south side of Main Street will be getting facelifts.
"The Main Attraction" team was part of the Appalachian Community Learning Project workshop created by The Rensselaerville Institute. ACLP uses citizen sparkplugs to create the community change needed to jumpstart local economies. By starting with small projects such as "The Main Attraction" even the most distressed small communities can gain the experience needed to move on to more complex strategic activities.
