Food Drive
WTVA is sponsoring a food drive to collect items for local food banks. They have asked the Choctaw County Extension office to help with this project. Canned food and non-perishable food items collected at our office will go to Broken Wings Ministry. Food items may be brought to the Choctaw County Extension Office. Help create
animal shelter
The Choctaw County Animal Clinic is raising funds to create an animal shelter. They are looking for a building or lot for the animal shelter. If you know of a building or lot that would be free to use or for sale at a reasonable price call Rita Morris at 285-9006. Also, if anyone would like to donate supplies for the animal shelter contact Rita Morris at 285-9006.
Full Circle Knitting/Crochet Group
Tuesdays 9:00 - noon
Choctaw County Extension Office. All are invited to attend; beginners through experts. Bring your needles and yarn and work on your own project or work on one of our community service projects. For more information, call the office at 285-6337.
OCC Week
Nov. 18-23
Local churches are collecting shoe box gifts to be delivered to needy children around the world. The local collection site is Ackerman Baptist Church, 185 Cherry Street, Ackerman. Drop off times are Nov. 16-21, Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-noon and 2 p.m.-4p.m, Sunday, Nov. 22 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 23 from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. Anyone may participate by donating a filled shoe box for a needy child. NARFE to MEET
Nov. 19
The National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association will meet Thursday, Nov. 19 at Barnhill's Restaurant on Highway 12 in Starkville at 11:30 A.M. The guest speaker will be Mr. Andrew Rendon, Director of the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for American Veterans, which is located on the Mississippi State University campus. All active and retired federal employees are invited to attend. There will not be a NARFE meeting in December. The next NARFE meeting will be January 28, 2010.

This presentation will provide information you need for a great landscape with less work on Nov. 19 at noon at the Choctaw Co. Extension Office. This program is by interactive video on Nov. 19 from noon-1 p.m. at the Choctaw County Extension Office. There is no charge. Ackerman UMC Lunch Nov. 20
The Ackerman United Methodist Church will conduct their annual Stew Luncheon and Bake Sale on Friday, Nov. 20 in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The Luncheon and Bake Sale will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until mid-afternoon or until all baked goods are sold. Lunch will consist of homemade Brunswick stew, crackers, homemade dessert, and tea for a contribution of $5. Baked goods and other items that can be used for the holiday week will be available. For more information call 285-7097 or the church office. Come by and see us the Friday before Thanksgiving for your baking needs. Takeouts will be available for the luncheon.
Triad meeting
Nov. 24
The Triad Council meets on the last Tuesday of each month. They are meeting Nov. 24 at noon at the Bed and Breakfast on South Ann Street, Weir. Triad is the agreement of law enforcement agencies in the county and older or retired persons in the community working together to reduce the criminal victimization of the elderly and the disabled persons in the county. Triad works to reduce crime for everyone. Triad Council continues to invite anyone interested in having a neighborhood watch, which is a Community Block Club, in your neighborhood needs to attend the meeting to make plans. Triad Council members may bring a covered dish to share at the luncheon and also have a wrapped item to share at playing Bingo. Also, bring a video if you have a movie that you would like to watch on TV.
Gospel singing
Nov. 28
There will be a gospel singing program, Saturday, Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Millspring M.B. Church in Weir. The program is featuring Gospelations of Columbus, Mt. Olivet Praise Team of Starkville, Heaven sent of Columbus, Brothers for Christ of Goodman, Gospel Travelers and Union Choice of Weir. Come and help us lift up the name of Jesus in songs and praises.
Christmas Trees needed
The annual Holiday Open House will be held Thursday, Dec. 10 at the Choctaw County Library. Youth and adult groups, organizations and churches are encouraged to decorate a Christmas tree for the Holiday Open House. Christmas. Trees may be real or artificial. We ask that no food items be used as decoration and no glitter be used. The public will vote for their favorite tree and a People's Choice Award will be awarded. If your group/organization would like to put up a tree, contact Juli Hughes, Choctaw County Extension Office, at 285-6337 or by email jhughes@ext.msstate.edu by December 1.
Ackerman Parade Entry
Deadline Dec. 1
The deadline for submitting entries in the Ackerman Christmas Parade is Tuesday, Dec. 1. Entry forms may be picked up, mailed, for faxed from Ackerman Town Hall.
The Christmas Parade will be held Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. The theme this year is "A Christmas Wish List." For more information on the parade, contact Ackerman Town Hall at 285-6251.

Christmas Parade
Dec. 3
The Town of Ackerman will host the annual Christmas Parade on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. The theme this year is "A Christmas Wish List." The parade route will begin at Ackerman High School an will travel west down Main Street, continue through two 4-way stop signs, to the intersection of Highway 15. The parade route turn right onto Highway 15, travel north to Cherry Street, take a right and continue to the Baptist Church.

Master Gardener Training Offered
Deadline Feb. 3
Master Gardener training will be conducted Feb. 23 - April 1, 2010 every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m.- 5 p.m. at the Choctaw County Extension Office. Training will be conducted via interactive video. Cost is $85 which includes notebook, materials & refreshments. Topics to be taught include: basic botany, soils, vegetables, weed science, lawns, ornamentals, fruits & nuts, entomology, plant diseases, invasive plants and plant propagation. Registration and fee is due by Feb. 8 at the Choctaw County Extension office in the Courthouse Annex. Fall Festival
John Wesley Miller Community Foundation will hold a Fall Festival Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Weir Co-op. It will start at 3 p.m.. There will be games, a cake walk, bingo, and a consession stand. "Breakfast with Santa" Dec. 5
The Ackerman Student Government Association will be hosting "Breakfast with Santa" on Dec. 5 in the high school cafeteria from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 am. Arts and crafts, games, and a photo with Santa along with breakfast are all included in the ticket price. In addition, a "Santa's Toy Shop" of used toys in very good to excellent condition will also be available for purchase. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. CCHGS to meet Nov. 21
Choctaw County Historical and Genealogical Society will meet on November 23 at noon at the library in Ackerman. Program to be presented by Margie Gilmer and will be ãWalking Genealogyä. This program will be a tour of the Chancery Clerkâs office, Circuit Clerkâs office and Tax Assessor/Collectorâs office. Anyone interested in research and history is welcome to attend, bring your questions and add to the fun.
